NY-RaMP Scholars 2024-2025

9/10/2024

A tremendous welcome from everyone on the fourth floor of the Belfer Research Building to the first ever cohort of NY-RaMP Scholars!

These ten recent college graduates were selected from a large applicant pool for a 1-year NSF-funded postbaccalaureate experience that includes training and research. Beginning August 1, 2024, team-building events at the Belfer building and Central Park included NY-RaMP Scholars, Mentors, Co-Mentors, and a Scholar from the Damon Runyon SPARK postbac program. These events enabled the group to form a tight-knit, and friendly, cohort. After four weeks of building their skills at the DNA Learning Center NYC, the Scholars joined the Hunter College Belfer community. Each Mentor gave an interactive presentation to the Scholars about their current laboratory research projects, followed the next week by a presentation about their scientific field. In a dramatic Match Day ceremony, each Scholar opened an NY-RaMP bag containing a lab coat emblazoned with a very special pair of labels: the Scholar's name and their “matched” lab's name!

The NY-RaMP Scholars then started doing research in their assigned mentors’ labs. They were eager to advance their projects and learning, advancing their potential careers in science.

Quotes from NY-RaMP Scholars:

"I was inspired to apply for NY-RaMP when I realized that I would be surrounded by a community of like-minded scholars and mentors who would support me, just as I would support them, during this period of growth and discovery."
— Imani Williams, NY-RaMP Scholar 2024/2025

"I am excited to conduct my own scientific experiments and learn how to effectively communicate scientific expertise to a broader audience in a way that makes scientific information more accessible and understandable to everyone."
— Khizr Khan, NY-RaMP Scholar 2024/2025

"I am deeply inspired by the opportunity to see everything I’ve learned in the classroom be applied in the real world. Real labs, real mentors, really working together to make an impact."
— Meghan Scott, NY-RaMP Scholar 2024/2025
